ADHD Assessments

Gold-standard adult ADHD assessment and ongoing medication management

MRCPsych Consultant PsychiatristDeputy Editor, RCPsych ADHD Position StatementComprehensive written report includedBarnet, North London

Dr. Korb is deputy editor of the Royal College of Psychiatrists' position statement on ADHD in people with Intellectual Disabilities (CR230, 2021).

The RCPsych position statement sets the national standard for adult ADHD diagnosis and management in the UK. As deputy editor, Dr. Korb has specialist expertise in diagnostic criteria, medication management, and evidence-based care — expertise she applies directly to every assessment she conducts.

What to Expect

The assessment process is structured to meet NICE guidance and RCPsych standards for adult ADHD diagnosis.

  1. 1

    Pre-Assessment Questionnaires

ADHD rating scales are provided in an online format, enabling you to complete and edit your responses securely before your assessment. These include the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). They gather structured information about the nature and frequency of your current symptoms and how they affect your daily life. Where possible, a collateral informant — someone who knew you as a child, such as a parent or sibling — will also be asked to complete a short questionnaire.

  2. 2

    Clinical Interview (90 minutes)

The 90-minute appointment is a structured clinical interview covering your current symptoms in detail — including inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, executive functioning, and emotional dysregulation. Dr. Korb will also take a thorough developmental and childhood history, exploring your experience at school, home, and socially from an early age. Educational and occupational functioning are explored, alongside the impact of symptoms on your daily life, relationships, and wellbeing. A differential diagnosis is considered throughout — ruling out other conditions that can present similarly to ADHD, such as anxiety, mood disorders, or sleep problems.

  3. 3

    Comprehensive Written Report

A comprehensive written report is included in the assessment fee at no additional cost. The report sets out the findings of the assessment in full, including background history, symptom profile, diagnostic formulation, diagnosis where applicable, and recommendations for treatment and support. It is suitable for sharing with your GP, employer, HMRC (for access to work), educational institutions, or for any other purpose you require.

  4. 4

    Medication Management

Where medication is indicated and agreed, Dr. Korb will initiate titration — a careful, stepwise process of adjusting the dose to find the level that is most effective with the fewest side effects. Follow-up appointments during this phase are typically every 4–6 weeks. Once you are established on a stable dose, appointments can move to every 3–6 months. Where possible, Dr. Korb will arrange a shared care agreement with your GP so that repeat prescriptions can be issued locally, reducing the need for ongoing private prescriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about private ADHD assessment and ongoing care. If your question is not answered here, please get in touch.

What does a private adult ADHD assessment involve?

A private adult ADHD assessment with Dr. Korb involves pre-assessment questionnaires (including validated ADHD rating scales such as the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS)), a 90-minute clinical interview covering your current symptoms, childhood history, and educational and occupational functioning, collateral history from someone who knew you as a child where possible, and a comprehensive written report setting out the findings, diagnosis where applicable, and recommendations.

Do I need a GP referral for a private ADHD assessment?

No — you can self-refer directly without a GP referral. While a referral is not required, it is generally recommended that you inform your GP that you are seeking a private ADHD assessment, so that your care can be well coordinated.

How long does the ADHD assessment take?

The clinical interview appointment itself lasts 90 minutes. In addition, you will be asked to complete pre-assessment rating scales before the appointment — these typically take 20–40 minutes. A collateral informant (someone who knew you as a child) may also be asked to complete a questionnaire.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. A comprehensive written report is included in the assessment fee at no additional charge. The report sets out the assessment findings, diagnosis where applicable, clinical formulation, and recommendations — suitable for sharing with your GP, employer, or educational institution.

Can Dr. Korb prescribe ADHD medication?

Yes. Dr. Korb is a consultant psychiatrist and can prescribe both stimulant medications (methylphenidate and amphetamine-based preparations) and non-stimulants (such as atomoxetine). Where medication is initiated, she provides careful titration and monitoring during follow-up appointments, and will work towards a shared care arrangement with your GP once you are established on a stable, effective dose.

What if I already have an NHS ADHD diagnosis?

If you already hold an NHS ADHD diagnosis and are looking for private medication management, more responsive follow-up appointments, or titration support, Dr. Korb can provide ongoing care without necessarily repeating a full assessment. Please mention your existing diagnosis at the time of booking so that your appointment can be structured appropriately.

Is ADHD medication controlled?

Yes. Stimulant ADHD medications — such as methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Elvanse) and lisdexamfetamine — are Schedule 2 controlled drugs under UK law. This means they require a special controlled drug prescription and cannot be called in by phone. Prescriptions are issued at each appointment or by secure post as appropriate. Non-stimulant alternatives such as atomoxetine are not controlled drugs.

How long will I need follow-up appointments?

During the titration phase — when medication dose is being adjusted to find the optimal level — follow-up appointments are typically every 4–6 weeks. Once you are established on a stable and effective dose and there are no outstanding concerns, appointments can often move to every 3–6 months for ongoing monitoring and prescription renewal.
