Autism Assessments
Gold-standard diagnostic assessment for adults using ADOS-2 and ADI-R
Two Assessment Options
North London Psychiatry offers two levels of autism assessment. Both include a comprehensive written report and follow-up appointment. The key difference is the inclusion of the ADOS-2 observational component in the full package.
Full ADOS-2 Package
Gold Standard£2,600
- ADOS-2 structured observational assessment
- ADI-R developmental interview
- Two ADOS-2 certified assessors throughout
- Comprehensive written diagnostic report
- Follow-up appointment included
Developmental Assessment
Clinical Interview£1,200
- Comprehensive clinical interview
- Detailed developmental history
- Validated screening questionnaires
- Written diagnostic report included
- Follow-up appointment included
Does not include the ADOS-2 observational component.
Why does the full ADOS assessment cost £2,600?
The ADOS-2 requires two trained assessors present throughout the entire assessment. Both must hold ADOS-2 certification — specialist training that requires regular calibration to maintain diagnostic reliability.
The assessment itself typically lasts 60–90 minutes, after which both assessors independently score their observations before comparing and finalising results. This is followed by a clinical review and the preparation of a detailed written diagnostic report.
This fee reflects the clinical rigour of the gold-standard approach — the same standard used in leading NHS and research settings.
What to Expect
The following outlines the full ADOS-2 assessment process from start to finish.
- 1
Pre-Assessment Questionnaires
Before your appointment, you will be asked to complete a set of validated autism screening questionnaires. These help the clinical team to prepare and ensure the assessment is as efficient and thorough as possible.
- 2
ADOS-2 Observational Assessment (60–90 min)
The ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) is a structured, play- and activity-based observational assessment administered by two trained assessors simultaneously. It is the gold standard for autism diagnosis and is internationally recognised as the most reliable diagnostic instrument available.
- 3
ADI-R Developmental Interview
The ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview — Revised) is a structured clinical interview that covers developmental history in depth — including early childhood development, social communication milestones, and current behaviours. It provides a detailed longitudinal picture of the individual's development alongside the ADOS-2 observational data.
- 4
Diagnostic Report
A comprehensive written diagnostic report is included in the fee. The report covers the full assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions, and clinical recommendations. It is suitable for use with employers, educational institutions, the NHS, and other agencies.
- 5
Follow-Up Appointment
A follow-up appointment is included to discuss the diagnostic report in full, explore what the findings mean for you personally, and plan any next steps — including support, adjustments, or onward referrals.
Experience in Adults, Women, and Complex Presentations
Dr. Laura Korb is a consultant psychiatrist with specialist training and certification in ADOS-2 and ADI-R diagnostic instruments. She is experienced in assessing adults across a wide range of presentations — including those who have gone undiagnosed for many years, women whose autism was masked or misidentified in childhood, and individuals with complex co-occurring conditions.
Autism in adults often looks different from the presentations described in older diagnostic criteria, which were developed predominantly from research on male children. Many adults — particularly women and those who developed strong masking strategies — have accumulated psychiatric diagnoses (such as anxiety, depression, or eating disorders) without the underlying autism having been identified.
Dr. Korb takes a thorough, unhurried, and non-judgmental approach to assessment and is experienced in recognising the full range of autistic presentations in adults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about private autism assessments. If your question is not answered here, please get in touch.
What is the ADOS-2 and why is it the gold standard?
The ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) is a structured, standardised observational assessment in which trained clinicians observe social communication, interaction, and behaviour through a series of planned activities. It has the most robust evidence base of any autism diagnostic tool, and its findings are widely recognised by employers, the NHS, universities, and other institutions. Used alongside the ADI-R developmental interview, the ADOS-2 forms the definitive diagnostic standard for autism spectrum condition.
Why does the full autism assessment cost £2,600?
The ADOS-2 requires two independently trained and certified assessors to be present throughout the assessment. Both must hold current ADOS-2 certification, which involves specialist training and regular calibration to maintain reliability. The assessment itself typically lasts 60–90 minutes, after which both assessors independently score their observations, then meet to compare and finalise results. This is followed by a detailed clinical review and the preparation of a comprehensive diagnostic report. The fee reflects the significant clinical resource involved in this level of rigour.
What is the difference between the £2,600 and £1,200 assessment?
The full package (£2,600) includes the ADOS-2 observational component and, if a family member is available, a detailed developmental interview (ADI-R). The ADOS-2 requires two certified assessors and is considered the gold standard. The Developmental Assessment (£1,200) includes a full ADI-R developmental interview and clinical developmental assessment — it does not include the ADOS-2 observational component. Dr. Korb will advise which is most appropriate for your situation.
Do I need a GP referral for a private autism assessment?
No. You can self-refer directly without a GP referral. Simply book via the online booking system or contact us with your enquiry. While a GP referral is not required, it is generally a good idea to inform your GP that you are pursuing a private autism assessment, so that they are aware and your medical records remain up to date.
How long does the autism assessment process take?
The ADOS-2 assessment itself lasts approximately 60–90 minutes. For the full ADOS-2 package, there may be one or two assessment appointments depending on clinical need, followed by independent scoring and report preparation. The Developmental Assessment is typically completed in one longer appointment. Following the assessment, the written report is prepared and then discussed at a follow-up appointment.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. A comprehensive written diagnostic report is included in the fee for both assessment options. The report contains the full assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions, and clinical recommendations. It is written to a standard suitable for use with employers, educational institutions, the NHS, Universal Credit or PIP applications, and other agencies that may require formal documentation.
Can adults be newly diagnosed with autism?
Absolutely. Many adults reach mid-life — or later — without having received an autism diagnosis, particularly women, those with co-occurring conditions, or those whose presentations were masked in childhood. Dr. Korb is experienced in assessing adults across the full range of presentations, including those with complex histories or previous diagnoses that may not fully account for their difficulties.
What happens after an autism diagnosis?
A follow-up appointment is included with the assessment to discuss the findings in depth. This is an opportunity to explore what the diagnosis means for you, discuss any reasonable adjustments you may be entitled to at work or in education, and plan any next steps. Dr. Korb can provide a letter for employers or institutions if required. Many people also benefit from follow-up to address co-occurring conditions — such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, or sleep difficulties — which are common alongside autism spectrum condition.
