Legal status and authorisation

Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK since November 2018, following rescheduling under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001.

It can only be prescribed by doctors listed on the GMC Specialist Register. Not all doctors hold this authorisation — it is restricted to specialists.

Dr. Laura Korb (GMC No. 7071772) is listed on the GMC Specialist Register and is fully authorised to assess for and prescribe medical cannabis products.

Medical cannabis is not a first-line treatment

Most patients considered for prescribing will have already tried other evidence-based treatments without adequate relief. Dr. Korb will conduct a thorough assessment to determine eligibility and suitability — medical cannabis is considered as part of a broader, individualised treatment approach.

What to Expect

From your first appointment to ongoing prescription management — here is how the process works.

  1. 1

    Initial Assessment (60–90 minutes)

The initial appointment involves a full clinical history: your current symptoms, all previous treatments tried, full mental health history, any co-occurring physical health conditions, and a thorough suitability assessment. Medical cannabis is one tool within a broader treatment approach — Dr. Korb will assess whether it is clinically appropriate for your specific situation and what role it might play alongside other elements of your care.

  2. 2

    Prescribing Decision

If you are assessed as eligible, Dr. Korb will discuss the prescribing decision with you fully. Different product types are available — including oils, dried flower for vaporisation, and other formulations — and the appropriate delivery method will be discussed depending on your clinical profile, lifestyle, and preferences.

  3. 3

    Specialist Pharmacy

Medical cannabis prescriptions are not dispensed at standard high street pharmacies. Your prescription will be fulfilled by a specialist pharmacy with experience in handling controlled cannabis-based medicines. Delivery is typically to your home address. The pharmacy team can advise on product handling and storage.

  4. 4

    Ongoing Monitoring

Regular follow-up appointments are an important part of safe medical cannabis prescribing. These appointments allow Dr. Korb to review your response to treatment, make any necessary adjustments to the prescription, and address any concerns or side effects. Follow-up frequency is determined by your clinical progress.

Conditions Considered for Prescribing

The following conditions may be considered for medical cannabis prescribing following a thorough clinical assessment. Eligibility depends on individual treatment history and clinical suitability.

PTSD

For patients with treatment-resistant PTSD, or where other evidence-based treatments — such as trauma-focused CBT, EMDR, or medication — have not provided sufficient relief, medical cannabis may be considered as part of a broader treatment plan.

Anxiety Disorders

Treatment-resistant anxiety disorders where first- and second-line treatments have been trialled without adequate benefit. A thorough assessment of treatment history is required.

Chronic Conditions with Psychological Component

Chronic pain and other physical health conditions that carry a significant psychological burden may be considered where there is relevant clinical evidence and appropriate treatment history.

Other Treatment-Resistant Conditions

Other mental health conditions where the evidence base supports cannabis-based medicine and where adequate trials of standard treatments have been completed without sufficient response.

Eligibility for medical cannabis prescribing is always determined by a thorough individual assessment. The conditions listed above do not guarantee eligibility. Dr. Korb will review your complete treatment history and current clinical picture before any prescribing decision is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about medical cannabis prescribing. If your question is not answered here, please get in touch.

What conditions can be treated with medical cannabis?

Medical cannabis may be considered for PTSD, treatment-resistant anxiety disorders, chronic pain conditions with a significant psychological component, and other treatment-resistant mental health conditions where the evidence base supports its use. Eligibility is determined by a thorough clinical assessment — not all patients will be suitable, and prescribing is only considered where other evidence-based treatments have been tried without adequate relief. Dr. Korb will review your full history to determine whether medical cannabis is clinically appropriate for you.

Is medical cannabis legal in the UK?

Yes. Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK since November 2018, following a change to Schedule 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. It can only be prescribed by doctors listed on the GMC Specialist Register — not all doctors are authorised to prescribe it. Dr. Laura Korb (GMC No. 7071772) is listed on the GMC Specialist Register and is authorised to prescribe cannabis-based medicines for medicinal use.

What does the medical cannabis assessment involve?

The initial assessment is a 60–90 minute appointment covering your current symptoms in detail, the full history of treatments you have tried and your response to them, your complete medical and psychiatric history, and any relevant social or lifestyle factors. Dr. Korb will use this information to determine whether medical cannabis prescribing is clinically appropriate, and if so, which products and delivery methods are most suitable for your needs.

Do I need to have tried other treatments first?

In most cases, yes. Medical cannabis is not a first-line treatment. It is generally considered for patients who have already tried other evidence-based treatments — such as talking therapies, standard medications, or other established interventions — without achieving adequate relief. Dr. Korb will review your treatment history carefully at the assessment. If you have not yet had an adequate trial of standard treatments, she may advise on other options before considering medical cannabis.

Will I need a GP referral?

No. You can self-refer directly without a GP referral. However, it is strongly recommended that you inform your GP that you are seeking a medical cannabis assessment and, if prescribed, that you are receiving cannabis-based medicine. This ensures your GP is aware of all medications and can coordinate your overall care safely. Dr. Korb will write to your GP following the assessment.

How is medical cannabis prescribed and dispensed?

Following a clinical assessment, if you are assessed as eligible, Dr. Korb will issue a private prescription. Medical cannabis is not dispensed at standard high street pharmacies — it is fulfilled by specialist pharmacies experienced in handling cannabis-based medicines. These pharmacies typically deliver directly to your home. The pharmacy team will advise on the product, storage, and use.

Can I drive while using medical cannabis?

You must not drive if impaired by any substance, including medically prescribed cannabis. THC-containing products in particular may impair driving ability and affect reaction times and judgement. UK drug-driving law applies to prescribed medications just as it does to recreational drugs — impaired driving is an offence regardless of whether the substance was prescribed. This will be discussed in full at your assessment, and Dr. Korb will advise based on the specific products and doses involved.

What are the ongoing costs?

The initial assessment is £550 and follow-up appointments are £260. These fees cover Dr. Korb's clinical time and are separate from the cost of the cannabis products themselves. Product costs vary depending on the type of product prescribed, the dose, and the dispensing pharmacy. These costs will be discussed with you at the time of prescribing so you have a clear understanding of the ongoing financial commitment.
